PRESS RELEASE DATED 15TH FEBRUARY 2011

FOLLOWING PRESENTATION OF FUNDS TO THE PRESS

You can plan a perfect fundraising event, but you can never measure the love the Maltese people have for the abandoned animals. You can build animal shelters but without the commitment and patience of animal lovers, you will not go far. This and much more was witnessed during two fund raising events that were organised by TV personalities, Nevise Borg Caligari and husband Pierre Borg, both presenters and producers of their programs Pink Panther and On d Road respectively, who earlier on this year have joined forces to organise two events for the benefit of the abandoned animals.

The Dog Walk, the first activity of its kind to increase awareness about the daily abuse on dogs, left extraordinary results on different fronts. The activity took place on Saturday 8th January 2011, at 1pm, with an expected attendance of around 400 people. From a week prior, dogs homed at the Animal Welfare shelters were vetted, washed and prepared for this activity. The Walk started from the Animal Welfare Department at Ghammieri (Limits of Luqa) and headed towards Qormi, where with the great assistance of the Qormi Local Council, coffee and pastries have been served to those present. Special thanks go to Golden Harvest for their support, to Borg Cardona & Sons Ltd for distributing treats to the dogs and providing leashes for 40 dogs and last by not least, to Godric Marston and the animal welfare officers, for their voluntary work on this event. The walk was headed by a team of On d Road bikers, followed by an ambulance of the Animal Welfare Division and Police officers from the Qormi Police Station. At the end of the walk, it was heart-breaking for the people who booked a dog from the Animal Welfare to watch the dog that they accompanied for the walk to go back to its shelter, to the extent that 16 dogs were adopted and today they reside with a family that loves them. The people attending to this Dog Walk with their own dogs ended up being around 2500 people and the sum gathered was € 3,797.91

The day after it was the turn for the 4th edition of the Charity Ride. Motorbikes started gathering at 9am at the Luxol Grounds, where a € 5 per person donation was given, redeemable as a lunch voucher at the end of the ride. After an hour, the roar of engines echoed across Pembroke and the Police motorbikes escorted the ride along the coast road to Golden Bay, up to Rabat through Mgarr, down to Qormi and Luqa and finally at the Hagar Qim Bar and Restaurant in Qrendi, where the participating bikers were treated to a lunch. Biker bands “Colour Blind”, “I am not Johnny Cash” and “Sergio Elvis” entertained and a scooter was also raffled amongst those present. 900 bikes attended the bike ride and € 5, 144.46 were gathered from this activity.

In addition to this € 796.48 were collected from individual donations and donation boxes scattered around pet shops in Malta & Gozo. These 2 activities were intensely publicised on ONE TV during the months of November and December and people could also donate through 3 pre-defined donations (€ 2.33, € 4.66 and € 6.99). The amount collected was that of € 10, 930.40.

The total sum of € 20, 669.25 was rounded up by Borg Cardona & Sons Ltd to the final figure of €23,000. Added to the money collected in the previous 3 years, we have the total of € 45, 800 collected purely to the benefit of the abandoned animals.

The money collected from these activities will be given out in voucher form, to be redeemed in pet food & medicine by those sanctuaries and gold hearted volunteers who are most in need. These people collect injured and helpless animals from the street and thanks to them; these animals are then cured and taken care of. Obviously for this to happen, a lot of money is required and most of the time, these expenses are paid out of their own pockets.

These sanctuaries are the following Noah’s Ark, AAA, Island Sanctuary, Gozo SPCA, Happy Paws, Funny Farm, Thomasina Cat Sactuary, St. Francis Foundation Association, Carers for Stray and Abandoned Felines, Cospicua Animal Welfare Society together with other 39 individual beneficiaries.

For the past 4 years, the popular TV show On D Road, organised a charity ride in aid of abandoned animals. Both rides were a very huge success with the participation of over 750 bikers.

This year, On D Road Team in collaboration with Pink Panther is planning its 4th Charity Ride + a Dog Walk in aid of all abandoned animals!

The money collected from these events, will be given out as vouchers of food & medicine to those sanctuaries and gold hearted people who are in most need.  These people collect injured and helpless animals from the street.   And thanks to them, these animals are then cured and taken care of.  Obviously for this to happen, a lot of money is required and most of the time, they pay these expenses out of their pocket.

The Dog Walk is planned for Saturday 8th January 2011, at 1pm. The aim of this event is to collect funds for the abandoned animals, and a silent protest against animal abuse.  We hear of daily abuse that happen in Malta, and this has to be stopped.  All dog owners are encouraged to join us, and those not having a dog are still welcome to join us and take a dog for a walk from a sanctuary.  For more details, join us on Facebook group Pink Panther or our website www.pinkpanther.com.mt.

CHARITY RIDE – SUNDAY 27TH DECEMBER 2010

On Sunday 27th December 2010, Pet-Program Pink Panther joined forces with automobile-program On d road, for the 3rd consecutive year to organise a charity ride in aid of the abandoned animals.

The previous 2 bikes were a hug success with over 500 bikers. € 2,300 were collected in aid of AAA and a voucher redeemable for food was given after the first ride and over € 7,000 were collected last year in aid of SOS Animal Malta.

The 2009 ride, featured a drive starting from Luxol grounds, heading north towards the Coast Road.  Once past Bugibba, the bikers droved towards Mgarr towards St. Paul’s Bay by-pass and Golden Sands.  From Mgarr they started heading south-bound, destination Hagar Qim, driving through Zebbug, Qormi, Luqa and Zurrieq, before being treated for drinks and snacks at Hagar Qim Bar and Restaurant.

The number of bikers was a big surprise… over 650 bikers.

When the official sum was announced, on the 1st of February, the surprise was even bigger.  A record sum of € 13, 500.  6 times as much the sum of the 1st year and double the sum of the 2nd year.  The sum included a big donation of over € 1,000 by Borg Cardona Co Ltd importers of the brand Royal Canin.

A special thanks goes to the team of Pink Panther and On d road, the management and staff of One TV and Radio and finally to the bikers for their wonderful turnout, the biggest ride ever.

This result was achieved at the end of months of preparation, however it was the beginning of a better life for a lot of abandoned animals.
